Area Rugs in Contemporary Home Decor

The purpose of an area rug is to create a distinct area within a room around which furniture is arranged to define a purpose such as a seating arrangement, a play area or sleeping quarters. Additionally, they offer comfort under our feet, warm or toes and add luxury to our living space. While it has a distinct function to fulfill, the role of an area rug in the overall decor scheme of a room is very important. Rugs can act as focal points and artistic expressions or just form a simple backdrop to support other dramatic elements in a room. 

 Rugs can be synthetic or natural. From an eco-friendly and sustainability point of view I am a big fan of area rugs made of natural plant fibers like sisal, jute, grass, cotton etc. The look is sophisticated and understated. I love my floors neutral so I have less restriction adding patterns and colors through art and other decor elements. The general rules of using area rugs in various areas of a home are demonstrated through a few illustrations below. Exceptions work well too as you can see in the first photo in the living room section. So before you run off to buy a new rug, try to adapt your decorating plan to accommodate something you may already have.

Whether you are a neutral color person like me or you love the patterns and colors, area rugs will affect the decor of your room very strongly. If you are opting for a bold statement with your rug, remember to balance it with neutral furniture and complementing accessories. If your rug is the focal point of the room, let the rest of the decor support and showcase it.
